Heat pump humblebrag at 40°F

Hooked a 7 kW solar array to the panel and now my inverter heat pump announces “COP 3.4, baby” every time it ramps at 40°F — apparently it’s greener than me and not shy about it. Anyone else getting roasted by their own electrification?

Mine yells ‘COP 3.2’ at 39°F; switched to Quiet/Eco mode. @OP tried ramp limit?

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‌

I tamed most of the “COP 3.4, baby” at 40°F by widening the thermostat swing to 1°F so it ramps way less; @OP if you’ve got a MHK2/Sensi, it’s under differential/anticipator. Small caveat: you’ll feel a tiny bit more drift, but your 7 kW solar will still keep it grinning; curious what stat you’re.

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌

Try a solar-driven preheat: bump the setpoint +1°F when PV > about 3 kW around midday, then drop it later; it keeps the inverter from doing the ‘COP 3.4’ victory lap at 40°F and soaks up the free watts. Small caveat, @OP: cap or lock out aux heat so the preheat doesn’t accidentally fire strips.

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌

And try disabling “Powerful/Boost” in the installer menu and keep a flat setpoint through the 38–45°F band; it kills most of the efficiency-brag ramp-ups while your PV still carries the load. @oliver_lee47’s swing trick plus that change turned mine from hype-man to library mode. What controller are you on — MHK2/Sensi/factory?

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌

I tamed that “greener than me” brag by capping the compressor to about 80% max Hz in the installer settings; around 40°F it ramps smooth instead of showboating. With your 7 kW PV you’ll still cover the load, but recovery from setbacks will be a tad slower; what make/model, @OP?
